Boost your immune system


The advent of the Coronavirus brought a lot of concerns, especially in Africa, where there's limited access to precise information on health issues in rural areas. The number of cases are increasing daily and it's advisable to take precautionary measures to ensure we protect ourselves against this virus and other health conditions.

Now, most importantly, we have to work on our immune system. For those that neglected this for a long time, it's time to show more concern; bring it up as a challenge to detoxify your body and get rid of accumulated dirt.
I love to emphasize on the fact that our body already has the capacity to detoxify itself; we have organs(kidney, liver, lungs and skin) that do this work. The only thing we are asked to do is stop harmful practices, reduce taking junk food and eat right to help these organ function suitably.

The following have been researched on and found to have distinct properties to give our immune system the boost it needs to work properly.

Citrus: Citrus fruits are significant
 for their acidity, juiciness and unmistakable aroma. These fruits are cultivated in tropical and subtropical climates all over the world. Most often taken in juice form, the citrus fruits have a lot of health benefits.
They are superb source of Vitamin C and other minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, copper and potassium.
It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
It contains a lot of fibre and is also known to boost heart health.
The flavonoids found in citrus help protect brain cells and defend against neurodegenerative diseases.
Examples of citrus fruits include:
-Orange
-Lemon
-Grape fruit
-Lime
-Tangerine.




Tumeric: Turmeric is a flowering plant that belongs to the ginger family. It is a bright yellow-orange spice commonly used as a basic ingredient in curries and sauces. Personally, I can attest to the wonders of this plant. In 2017, I was diagnosed with rhinitis and was scheduled for surgery. I was also advised by my doctor to take tumeric tea regularly; long story short, It worked. After the re-examination, it was confirmed that I no longer needed the surgery.
So, I took interest in this miracle plant and did my research;
Turmeric contains curcumin, a substance with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Curcumin is strongly anti-inflammatory; In fact, it’s so powerful that it matches the effectiveness of some anti-inflammatory drugs, without the side effects.
Curcumin leads to several changes on the molecular level that may help prevent and perhaps even treat cancer.
With these, you should know that tumeric has such great properties we shouldn't ignore.



Garlic: Garlic is a herb grown all over the world. Usually taken raw or added as a spice in food preparation. It is enriched with Vitamin B1, B2, B3, B6, folate, Vitamin C, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, potassium, sodium and zinc. Garlic is known to be a  blood purifier, eases cold and cough, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of raw garlic may help prevent future neurodegenerative diseases, regulates blood sugar, boost immunity, It's rich nutrients like selenium and vitamin C contribute to eye health, prevents hair loss and Improve cardiovascular health.



Ginger: Ginger is widely used as a spice and medicine. Ginger contains anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral properties. Ginger is a good source of antioxidants, it also helps in relieving pains, cold and flu, supports cardiovascular health, it's anti-inflammatory effects can help with osteoarthritis, treat chronic indigestion and can significantly reduce menstrual pain(usually done traditionally).



Spinach: Spinach is an edible green vegetable consumed either fresh or after storage. Spinach is an excellent source of vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B2 and folate as well as being a good source of manganese, magnesium and iron. It is beneficial for eye health, reduce oxidative stress, help prevent cancer, and reduce blood pressure levels. It's high fibre content aids digestion.



Yogurt: Yogurt is a food produced by bacterial fermentation of milk. The bacteria used to make yogurt are called "yogurt cultures". Yogurt is very nutritious and regular intake of it may help boost the immune system. It is very high in protein and contains probiotics.



These food items are readily available and can be found in the market and food stores around us. Instead of going for inorganic supplements, why not try fresh organic foods.
Warning: Though, it's true these food items are known to have great health benefits, we should learn not to abuse them.
