My bad habits speak to me

Habits are important in our daily lives for a number of reasons; I particularly like that I don't even think about when or where I keep my keys at the end of the day or when I even pick them up the next day! They are an integral part of our way of life and can be essentially beneficial or detrimental to us.

We all have habits that we rely on for survival, earning a living, having fun, whatever— there's no one-size-fits-all solution that will enable everyone to lose weight, adapt to a new diet plan, begin exercising, achieve goals, and spend quality time with friends and family.

Most times because a person does not need to engage in self-analysis when performing routine tasks, habitual behaviour frequently goes unnoticed in those who manifest it. Yeah you heard me correctly, you aren't aware of half the habits you have. You're probably just lucky to know those one or two. Most likely owing to the fact that it is mentioned a number of times to us.

Now bad habits could be developed to sustain and counterbalance an extravagant good habit. For example, I have a bad habit of laughing in very serious situations, I'd smile a lot and oftentimes creep out the people around me but I guess I'd rather react that way than allow myself feel the forlornness. 

It's a bad habit, no doubt, and something I've been trying to work on before I play a "Chris rock" one day and not see a problem with making a joke outta a health condition. Yeah, I know y'all have a lot to say about this; I'm in the comment section waiting to be roasted.

In essence, we all have mild, severe & extreme bad habits that needs to be worked on especially in our society today where the value for humanity depreciates over time and flimsy excuses are given as to why those values should be thrown down the drain. 

Don't get me wrong. I'm not attempting to create a picture perfect person; rather, I am striving to raise awareness about the fact that we all have bad habits that silently speak to us. Sometimes, I'm fascinated by where addictions come from, and believe me, the vast majority think that we are mostly addicted to things like, alcohol, sex or drugs. I've also known that people can also be addicted to food, drinks, exercise, social media, TV series, snacking, bingeing, shopping, overthinking, negative self talk and lots more.


"Addiction begins with the hope that something "out there" can instantly fill the emptiness inside," Jean Kilbourne once said. And, most of the time, that "thing" becomes repetitive and consistent, and voila, a habit is formed!

Personally, I believe that habits have triggers, and that once we are aware of those triggers, we can easily control them.

However, habits generally are difficult to break. If it were that easy, we'd have more good than bad, because we could decide to switch at intervals to the one most appropriate for the present mood.

With that said, it is important to reach out to friends we trust when trying to break out of a bad habit, 'cause some peeps out there be talking drums waiting for who's going to announce problems (aka gist) to them without actually helping to solve it. Nobody is totally sane in this country, a lot of us are going through our little life drama and love is ultimately needed.

    1. Oh my good lord, you don't how excited this made me feel. Like I was literally galavanting in the house adding "init" and " wonky" at the end of most sentences I made. They go hear am🙃. You just activated the Briton in me 😉.

  2. Your writeup is really amazing tho.
    I once had to break out of a habit of turning off my alarm and going back to bed immediately and I did it by keeping my phone at a distance so when the alarm rings I literally have to stand up to reach my phone and it gets me five steps further to actually waking up to do what I have to do

This is really thoughtful of you sharing this, one particular bad habit a lot of people and unfortunately myself try to fight is "procrastinating" although I wouldn't intentionally delay but then I however tell myself that the time frame at that point isn't conducive enough and I have to wait for things to align first. This makes you loose track of time and the enthusiasm that was once held high starts to relinquish. One thing I have learnt over the years is that, there isn't a particular time to start a business, go on a leisure trip, acquire a new whip and become successful generally. It's just like wine, it gets better with time.

  4. This is yet another timely reminder that person growth and development starts with managing our habits. And yes we should keep striving to maintain healthy habits and lifestyle.
